Shootings at Las Vegas airport called ‘domestic violence’

Many people think of domestic violence as something that happens behind closed doors in the home. However, it often spills over into neighbors’ and friends’ homes, the workplace and very public locations.

Police say that’s what happened just before 6 p.m. on Sept. 19, when a man shot his estranged wife and the man who was with her at Las Vegas’s McCarran International Airport. The two victims were on the top level of a long-term parking structure at the airport, walking towards a vehicle, when they were shot, according to law enforcement.

The two were transported to Sunrise Hospital & Medical Center. They were reported to be in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries.

The 68-year-old man accused of the shooting was apprehended at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center not long after the event. He is facing charges including attempted murder.

Las Vegas police reportedly located him after they spotted an SUV in the medical center parking lot that they had seen on surveillance video of the airport parking lot. It was not reported why he was there.

The shooting occurred in the parking structure for one of the airport’s busiest terminals, which serves American, Delta and Southwest. However, no one else was injured. A law enforcement officer described it as “an isolated incident, domestic violence in nature.” No one else was injured and there were no disruptions to any flights or to airport operations.

While domestic violence is often a cause of divorce, sometimes people don’t engage in it until they feel that they’re in danger of losing a spouse. Anyone going through a divorce who is concerned that his or her safety or that of those around them is at risk can seek a protective order. Your Nevada family law attorney can advise you of the best course of action and help you take legal measures to protect yourself and others.
