What to do next

Your spouse has said a sentence that is difficult to hear: “I want a divorce.”

The moment you hear that sentence from your spouse can be a devastating one. Perhaps you had an idea that the statement was going to come one day or perhaps it came from out of the blue. Regardless, you are now wondering what you should do next. A recent newspaper article on the subject shared some ideas we would like to pass on to you.

When your spouse says those words, you instantly understand that drastic change is coming. If you have children, it’s very possible that you will go through a wide range of deep emotions, from fear of what will happen to your family, to feelings of deep anger over what the changes might do to your kids.

In the article we read, the first piece of advice was a good one: when you’ve heard your spouse say that they want a divorce, you should set about the task of finding yourself an experienced family law attorney. Find someone who understands not only the law, but also how to guide parents through the legal system; someone who is not only an effective litigator, but also a skilled negotiator.

Look online at Las Vegas law firm websites, looking for those that focus on family law. Read attorney biographies and ask friends and family if they are familiar with the firm. Look, too, for recommendations from FindLaw.com and for board-certified family law specialists.

Then sit down with an experienced attorney to discuss your circumstances, so that you can get a sense of the lawyer’s personality, as well as a sense of their ability to protect you and your family.

At the Kainen Law Group, we are proud of our attention to clients, the details of their situations and the experience and knowledge we bring to bear on every divorce, child custody dispute and all other family law matters. Please see our Child Custody page for more information about how we can help you.
